Muscle strength is an important determinant of physical performance and ability to live independently. several studies have shown that dialysis patients have loss of strength and that this loss of strength affects all muscle groups in the body. In general, muscle weakness can include loss of muscle mass (or atrophy of the muscle), a decrease in the muscles ability to generate force, a reduction of the nervous system to activate muscles, or a combination of all three!

Several muscle biopsy studies have been performed in patients with renal failure. These studies have shown abnormal muscle structure that is more prominent in individuals on dialysis than even those with chronic kidney disease that are not yet on dialysis.
Other studies have shown that muscle strength is an important predictor of gait speed in those receiving dialysis. Having the strength necessary to perform a normal gait is an important to maintain an independent lifestyle and to perform normal daily activities. Additionally and study last year showed that older men who had greater muscle mass had better outcomes following a kidney transplant.
Maintaining good strength while dealing with the negative effects that kidney disease and dialysis causes on muscles is extremely important to maintaining and independent lifestyle and being able to perform normal everyday functions.
