Heal a broken heart

One of the issues that must be dealt with during the procedure of dialysis is significant changes in blood pressure and other heart related issues. It is estimated that 20-30% of dialysis treatments are complicated by hypotension (low blood pressure) occurring during the session. There is also increasing studies that show myocardial ischemia (decreased blood flow to the heart muscles) can occur during dialysis. Dialysis can also cause heart rate rhythms to become abnormal. None of this means that you should not receive dialysis! Dialysis is absolutely necessary for those with renal insufficiency! But unfortunately it comes with some negative effects on the body.

In those with chronic renal failure undergoing dialysis, the mortality rate from cardiovascular conditions is 10-100 times greater than in the general population. The higher mortality rate is due not only to the influence of traditional risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and others, but also to these acute complications that take place during dialysis. Cardiovascular death is the single greatest cause of mortality in dialysis patients and of this, sudden death comprises the largest population.

All of this information is not written to scare anyone. Having the knowledge that if you can make your heart strong, and keep it strong, then you will experience the benefits of a heart that is not only better able to withstand the effects of dialysis but reduce many of the underlying health concerns that contribute to heart failure.

Renal Rehab is focused and creating individualized exercise programs that take into account the limitations of those with kidney disease and starting, and keeping, them on a path to a healthy, strong heart.
