Don't Worry, Be Happy!

Historically there has been a serious concern for patients with kidney disease and/or on dialysis exercising. The greatest risk for the kidney patient is for a cardiac event while exercising. Research has shown that the risk for a cardiac event while exercising is lower than a cardiac event happening while receiving dialysis. Additionally, by exercising you will actually be doing things for your body which will ultimately be lowering your risk for a cardiac event at anytime!

As with any exercise program, and especially for anyone with a medical condition, careful screening and evaluation needs to take place first to make sure it is safe to start exercising. Exercising is important for someone with renal disease. Without it, de-conditioning and decreased levels of functioning will occur and can compromise and individuals ability to perform even simple tasks. Also, renal disease can often lead to coronary artery disease and other cardiac conditions so it is important to stay active to keep those risk factors low.

With Renal Rehab we define success as the restoring of meaningful participation in life through adequate physical strength, endurance, and mobility. There are many significant potential benefits of exercise for renal patients and incorporating Renal Rehab into a persons treatment plan is a very positive step.
