Several of the known benefits of exercise or regular physical activity in the general population are directly related to areas of specific concern to individuals with kidney disease. Some of these include reduced risk for cardiovascular mortality (that means not dying from heart disease), improved ability to manage your blood pressure, better control of diabetes, and improved psychological well-beaning. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States., additionally approximately 80% of individuals with patients have a history of high blood pressure. Both of these factors are reduced with a medically prescribed exercise program that would then reduce the potential for mortality.

In addition to the improvement of cardiovascular status exercise has the potential to improve physical functioning and psychological well-beaning in individuals with kidney disease. Reduced ability to exercise, muscle wasting, and poor physical performance are highly prevalent among individuals with ESRD and are associated with development of disability, loss of independence, and death. Again, these factors can be modified with a quality medical exercise program.

An individual with renal disease who exercises may also improve solute removal during dialysis sessions by increasing blood flow to muscles and leading to greater clearance of urea and other toxins into the vascular system where they can be removed. This can ultimately lead to healthier muscles and blood and thus an overall healthier individual.
